Gotcha Day (part 2)

I could think of much better titles for this post, but since I had a "part one" I figured I better follow through with part two.  I would rather call it "New Adventures" or "Fun with Firsts" or even better "We are Completely in Love With Our Chinese Baby" (but then that would be a strange title for a post, wouldn't it?).

ChunMing's goodies
After the handover we brought ChunMing up to our hotel room and showed him some goodies we brought for him.  He was more interested in the tv remote, dad's cell phone, and our son's laptop (don't worry Ashton, we quickly put it up :). According to his schedule, ChunMing had time to watch tv each day, so he is very familiar with the television.  We decided to pull out the LeapPad we bought him and it was a hit!  He loves to put the earphones on his ears and alternate between using the LeapPad and changing channels on the television.

We went exploring and ChunMing was most excited about the grass, the fountain of water, the elevator, and looking over the balcony at everything below.  We picked him grass and he kept it in his hands for an hour or so, until we got back to our hotel room.  Our guide took us shopping down the street for pants since it was a bit chilly and we had only brought one pair of sweat pants and the rest shorts.  If it weren't for the fact that we were worried for our lives, I would have snapped a photo.  It was chaos on the streets!  Besides the ripped up sidewalks, debris, and bikes everywhere, the cars and people share what sidewalks there are and the traffic was so wild, it was funny.  Cars stopping for no one, which is very tricky with no pedestrian crosswalks.

David would get ChunMing wet in the fountain which always resulted in roaring laughter
ChunMing didn't like the smells downtown; frankly, neither did we

Feeling the grass an hour later :)

We ate at the hotel buffet so we could see what kinds of foods ChunMing liked.  David held him while I filled the plate with everything he pointed at.  He is great at expressing what he does and doesn't like.  He waves his hands in front of him or shakes his head no or yes.  He was very decisive; never hesitating.  I was a little surprised that he would eat such a variety of foods and how much food he could put away.  He loved the juice!

ChunMing had me feed him his juice and much of his food
He loved to slurp up the noodles

While we went about the rest of the day, he became more and more attached to Baba.  If David walked too far, ChunMing would yell out, "Baba!  Baba!"  He calls out for Mama for more domestic needs.  When David holds him he hugs his neck and will rub his face and ear against David's.  I loved to watch his eyes light up when he was with him.  Our two year old has some competition.  Do I resent it?  Of Course I do!  Just kidding.  I am thankful that David has this special time with him.  I will get my turn. :)

His laugh is infectious and his smile lights up a room.  He is absolutely precious and is going to be a great blessing for our entire family. I should add that he knows what he likes and has a strong personality; he is going to fit right in.  I eat up watching every detail about him.  I have 7 years to make up and will take advantage of the precious low key time we have getting to know him while here in China.

  1. Maya was totally in love with Baba in China and I kept thinking, "This guy's only contribution to the paperwork was his signature and she wants only HIM?" So unfair.

XiXi was NOT a fan of Baba at first and with a bigger child, I was totally wishing that he was because my back was killing me! By day 3 or so, he was allowing Baba to hold him, which was such a blessing.

It sounds like ChunMing is doing amazing! It's interesting to remember that the "culture shock" doesn't just happen when they leave China. I know for XiXi, and it sounds like ChunMing too, they left the orphanage so rarely, that just being out and about in their home city is pretty eye-opening.

He could not be more precious! My little kids already want a play date....and hey, that Sadie Hawkins dance is coming up on Bainbridge. Maya might just have to get herself a date!
